Speech by Benito Mussolini to the Atlanteans in Rome, Palatine, 13 August 1933: "

Atlanteans, official gentlemen, Four months ago, speaking on this sacred hill to the pomp of imperial Rome, I beckoned to your imminent trial and expressed my certainty. When your fearless Commander came to take leave of me, I told him that I was sure he would return. My joy, on this truly sunny day, is disturbed by a shadow for the two Fallen in Amsterdam and the Azores. The memory of these comrades will remain religiously guarded forever in our hearts: their end is the tribute that in every great enterprise we must recognize blindly fatality.

I have followed your trial with anxiety and security; today, after your triumph, classically Roman, I declare to you that you have fully deserved it: deserved for Italy, for the Revolution and for Aviation.

For Italy: during the twenty thousand kilometers of your flight, which over time will become legendary, hundreds of millions of men, in all the languages of the world, have pronounced the name of Italy, When you have arrived in America you have warmed, with your presence and with the proof that you have offered, the patriotism of those great communities of Italians. You deserved it for the Revolution, because your Cruise took place in a black shirt, because it was the Cruise that was to consecrate the fascist Revolution in the skies of two Continents. You deserved it for Aviation, and I think it will be many years before the other countries' aviation can, I will not say exceed, but equal your magnificent undertaking.

I express my deepest applause and my satisfaction as Head of Government, Italian and Fascist, and embracing your Commander, who has directed you with wisdom, with passion and with impetus until the victory, I intend to embrace all of you and each of you. His Majesty the King deigned to sign the promotion decrees. Today I want to give you the insignia and the badges of the new grade."
